When a 3D website earns its place, and when it does not

Motion and 3D can make a brand unforgettable or make a site slow and confusing. Here is how we decide, using three of our own builds.

When a 3D website earns its place, and when it does not
[ SHORT ANSWER ]

A 3D or cinematic website is worth it when the experience itself is the proof of quality, as with architecture, luxury and creative brands, and when it never blocks the visitor from the next step. It is the wrong choice when visitors mainly need to find information or act quickly.

Every few weeks someone asks us for a 3D website. Sometimes it is exactly the right call. Sometimes the honest answer is that a calm, fast page will win more business.

This article explains the test we use, with three projects from our own portfolio: a cinematic architecture concept, a restrained architecture studio site, and the iBOY website itself.

[ SECTION 01 ]

What do we mean by a 3D website?

We use the term for any site where depth and motion carry part of the message: WebGL scenes, particle fields, scroll-driven camera moves, sculptural forms or a short opening film.

The technology is mature. The real question is whether the experience helps a visitor understand the business faster, or whether it only delays them.

[ SECTION 02 ]

When does 3D earn its place?

For CONCEPT, an architecture website we designed and built as iBOY concept work, the experience is the argument. A short opening sequence, sculptural gold forms on a warm stone palette and a slow, numbered presentation of selected works show international clients what a premium practice feels like before they read a word.

The same reasoning shaped our own homepage. A short film plays once per visit, the header waits until it ends, and returning visitors land straight on the finished frame so nobody sits through it twice.

[ SECTION 03 ]

When is a calm page the better choice?

MAKSH Architects designs architecture, interiors, landscapes and turnkey homes from studios in Bangalore, Hosur and Chennai. For them we chose restraint: large photography, generous space, a simple numbered list of nine disciplines and one consistent Let us talk action.

Their work already carries the emotion. Adding a heavy scene would have competed with the photographs and slowed the route to an enquiry, so the luxury comes from space and typography instead.

[ SECTION 04 ]

How do you keep a 3D site fast and accessible?

Every animation loop on our sites pauses when it scrolls out of view, and every scene has a still frame for visitors who ask their device for reduced motion. Content never waits on a scene to load, and the main action is reachable from the first screen.

We also decide the performance budget before the design, so the effect is shaped to fit the budget rather than the other way round.

[ KEY TAKEAWAYS ]
  • ✓Use 3D when the experience is the proof of quality, not as decoration.
  • ✓Never block the next step: content and the main action come first.
  • ✓Pause loops off screen and respect reduced motion settings.
  • ✓Set the performance budget before the design begins.
[ QUESTIONS ]

Common questions

Does a 3D website hurt SEO?
Not when the text content is rendered as normal HTML and the scene loads alongside it. Search engines read the page text, so keep headings, copy and links in the page rather than inside the canvas.
Is a 3D website slower on phones?
It can be. We use lighter scenes on small screens, pause animation off screen and show a still frame when reduced motion is requested.
Which businesses benefit most from 3D?
Architecture, interiors, luxury products, creative studios and technology brands, where the feeling of quality is part of what the client is buying.
