AI, ML, deep learning, LLMs and AGI: a plain guide for business owners

Five terms that get used as if they mean the same thing. What each one is, what it can do for a business today, and what is still a promise.

AI, ML, deep learning, LLMs and AGI: a plain guide for business owners
[ SHORT ANSWER ]

Artificial intelligence is the broad field, machine learning is AI that learns patterns from data, deep learning is machine learning with many layered neural networks, and large language models are deep learning models trained on text. Artificial general intelligence, a system that matches people across most tasks, does not exist today.

Business owners hear AI, ML, deep learning, LLMs and AGI used interchangeably, often in the same sentence and often by someone selling something.

Here is how they relate, explained without jargon, and where each one is genuinely useful for a business right now.

[ SECTION 01 ]

What is the difference between AI and machine learning?

Artificial intelligence is the whole field of making software do things that normally need human judgement. Some AI follows hand-written rules.

Machine learning is the part of AI that learns patterns from examples instead of rules. A model that predicts which leads are likely to buy, trained on past leads, is machine learning.

[ SECTION 02 ]

What is deep learning?

Deep learning is machine learning that uses neural networks with many layers. It is what made modern image recognition, speech recognition and translation work well.

It needs a lot of data and computing power to train, which is why most businesses use deep learning models that someone else has already trained, rather than training their own.

[ SECTION 03 ]

What is a large language model?

A large language model, or LLM, is a deep learning model trained on a very large amount of text. It predicts language well enough to write, summarise, classify, translate and answer questions.

We use LLMs inside GreenSignal AI, our own marketing simulation product, to score campaign variants against a synthetic audience before money is spent, and inside our internal studio tools to draft research and emails that a person then reviews. The pattern that works is the same in both: the model prepares, a person decides.

[ SECTION 04 ]

What is AGI, and can a business buy it?

Artificial general intelligence describes a system that could match people across most intellectual tasks, learning new ones without being built for them. No such system exists today, and nobody can sell you one.

Today's models are powerful but narrow in important ways: they can be confidently wrong, they lack reliable memory of your business unless you give it to them, and they need clear limits. Plan around what they do well now.

[ SECTION 05 ]

Where should a business start with AI?

Start with one repetitive task that already has a clear owner and a clear definition of good: answering common questions, sorting enquiries, summarising documents or drafting first versions. Measure the time saved and the error rate before expanding.

Keep a person in the loop for anything that reaches a customer, spends money or makes a commitment.

[ KEY TAKEAWAYS ]
  • ✓AI is the field; machine learning learns from data; deep learning uses layered neural networks; LLMs are deep learning models for language.
  • ✓AGI does not exist today. Be wary of anyone selling it.
  • ✓Start with one well-defined, repetitive task and measure it.
  • ✓Let the model prepare and a person decide on anything customer facing.
[ QUESTIONS ]

Common questions

Is ChatGPT an LLM?
ChatGPT is a product built on large language models. The model generates the text; the product adds the chat interface, tools and safety controls.
Do I need my own data to use AI?
Not to start. Pre-trained models work out of the box for writing and summarising. Your own data matters when you want answers grounded in your business, such as your products or policies.
Will AI replace my team?
In practice it removes repetitive steps and speeds up first drafts. The judgement, relationships and final decisions still sit with people.
